Road Tax

How many untaxed vehicles are there on our roads in the UK?

Does anybody know the answer to this question?

Furthermore, does anyone really care?

Untaxed
means uninsured in most cases, and surely the insurance would be invalidated by the insurers if they found that the vehicle was untaxed at the time of an accident. Also, untaxed would, in all probability, mean that, should the vehicle require a MOT, it is probably without one! Could it be a possible death-trap?

So many innocent lives are snuffed out by drivers without tax or insurance. So many people are also injured. So many people have their vehicles damaged or written off, and then have to claim on their own insurance, and therefore lose their no-claims bonus or allowance.

This is a big financial loss and all through NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN.

Isn't it long since time that officialdom did something useful for once and addressed this problem as a matter of urgency?

Anyone got any ideas on how to get this moving?

Government seems to be immune to public opinion and public petitions with thousands of names on are completely ignored... so something radical needs to be done.

Miles, miles, and more MILES

Within the United Kingdom we use miles for our maps, miles for our signposts and road and traffic marking [as in miles per hour], and miles to describe the distance from one city to another.

LONG MAY IT CONTINUE THIS WAY!

That is my opinion. Just consider for a moment the chaos and the cost involved if we were to change! The general public, taxpayers, would have to pay this unnecessary and enormous bill.

If this is the case, then why, oh why do we have to put up with television programmes being ruined by the fact that distances are portrayed in kilometres? As far as I am concerned, I either have to try and convert the distance back to our proper format [which makes one lose the thread of the programme] or just ignore distances... and become INFURIATED.

I have experienced this annoying phenomenon on all our terrestrial channels.

All comments would be greatly appreciated... is there anyone out there who would like to get a campaign going?

Driving Tests

Will the proposed alterations make ANY difference to the quality of any new drivers who are unleashed onto our ever more crowded roads?

My answer is an emphatic NO.

Those youngsters who will go on to be safe drivers, who will listen to advice, take things slowly, build up their knowledge and experience with care, and actually take a pride in being responsible drivers... would have done so anyway. It is a matter of attitude and of admitting that there is more to learn.

Those youngsters who 'know it all' and only do enough to get through their tests, who, as soon as they have passed their tests, forget everything they were taught, who drive at breakneck speed, who treat traffic calming schemes as a challenge, using them as a slalom course... will continue in their own sweet way.

Yes, special insurance schemes could be put into force whereby they are only covered if they adhere to certain rules... but two questions! Who will enforce it and how will it be enforced... a police car, bike, or policeman on foot are rarely seen sights these days? And, if they do not adhere to the rules and are not covered... who pays for the damage to the innocent party's vehicle?

This is not even mentioning in passing the snuffing out of innocent lives, the injuries, the destruction of family life and all the other attendant miseries.
